Landscapes

Landscape art is a popular art category that features subjects from the natural world. These works typically only portray scenery without human involvement or interaction, although animals are sometimes included in this category of art. There's no implicit style for framed landscape art because the tradition of this category has been in demand for so long. While most landscape canvas art is representational and realistic in nature, works such as Van Gogh's 'Starry Night' and 'Wheat Field with Crows' are included in this category due to the lack of human presence and the focus of nature as the primary subject. Many surreal landscapes, such as Dali's works, aren't included though, since most landscape art depicts scenes from the physical world, rather than the worlds of imagination and fantasy.

Many different artistic styles found landscape painting to be a fascinating subject. Impressionists used this form of painting because recording the way that light interacted with the world around them was the best way to hone their craft. Claude Monet, in particular, found depicting landscapes through this style a fascinating process, as seen in many of his works like 'Water Lilies' and 'San Giorgio Maggiore At Dusk'.

Although it's a rare occurrence, sometimes human beings are incorporated into these artworks. However, the depiction of people in landscape art is meant to enhance the beauty of nature as an additional element in the painting, rather than being treated as the primary subject. One example of this is in Vitali's work 'Seaside Summer I' where a beach scene includes a girl with a basket. Rather than detracting from the natural scenery of the piece, the girl seems to be at one with the surf rolling in and is depicted in a similar way so that her impact on the scene emphasizes the natural world.

The subjects available in landscape painting are diverse and cover nearly every mood and environs that the Earth has to offer. Images of forests, streams, ponds, fields, mountains, deserts, and even cityscapes or skylines are available through this art category.
